I know I am back tracking a little, but internet tends to be luxury in Kenya and I had to write about my favortite place on earth – Joska. Over the years, I have spend a total of 6 days here and I can tell you it really is the happiest place on earth (sorry, Disneyland!). Joska Middle School is a boarding school a rural area where sponsored children attend after they have been promoted from an elementary school in the slum of the Mathare Valley. Joska has had a 98% passing rate for the Kenyan National Exam to enter high school. The country’s average is 5%. These kids are so excited about school and so thankful that they have the opportunity to go to school.
They are also very welcoming. Sunday Morning was their church service and they had rehearsed songs and dances for the service and for all of thier visitors. I was so happy to see so many of my girls that I hadn’t seen in a year. I write to them and was anxious to hear how they are. The funniest thing that happened while I was there was on a tour of the school and the grounds. The teacher who was leading us was asking all about us. I tagged along with the team from Hemet, California and they were asking what our favorite foods were. I told then, “I am from Crossroads. What do you think my favorite food is?” In his loudest Kenyan voice and his biggest Kenyan smile he said, “HAMBURGERS!!!” Joska can’t wait for Crossroads to come…. with hamburgers!
The best part of the day was when I found out that Joska had added a high school this year and I was able to see so many of the kids I thought I wasn’t going to be able to see! And these girls get down! If church was like this at home, everyone would go!!!
